Excerpt from western.edu: Sean Guerrero, the iconic sculptor who works from salvaged chrome car parts, will be holding an exhibition at the Quigley Gallery in Quigley Hall on Western State Colorado University’s campus in August and September.
Guerrero of Crested Butte is a famous chrome sculptor with works displayed across the country. Gunnison Valley residents might recognize his work in Crested Butte, including the knight/dragon as well as the large “Pepsi horse” at the Center for the Arts. He has begun to attract national attention through his participation in the Bombay Beach Biennale, which takes place in Salton Sea, Calif.
New MGES students will install the Guerrero exhibition “Objets trouvés voyageant dans le temps” (Objects found travelling in time) under the expert direction of esteemed curator Davin Watne. This exhibition represents a major new chapter in Guerrero’s oeuvre because he will for the first time stage a major conceptual exhibition indoors, involving multiple pieces as well as multimedia.
Most people only know Guerrero’s work from what they see as whimsical public sculpture. This exhibition represents an opportunity to show the full intellectual complexity of his work, how he addresses art history and his role as an artist.
The exhibition will run from Aug. 27-Sept. 21, and the gallery will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and on weekends by appointment. The exhibition will also be available for private viewings by appointment Aug. 14-26.
